2023-03-16 PEO Update

May 31, 2023 McMaster B.Tech. PEO updates 0

Dear Students.

Below is our monthly update relating to the P.Eng. designation for B.Tech. graduates.

The wording on the PEO licensing website on “Academic Requirements” (https://www.peo.on.ca/licence-applications/become-professional-engineerhas) been changed from “CEAB-accredited programs and programs in the IIDD list” to “CEAB-accredited Program and Programs that meet PEO’s acceptance criteria”.  This is a positive change because our graduates may still be eligible for licensing if PEO can be convinced that they meet the acceptance criteria, following a technical exam schedule, as is now the case.  We are still lobbying to collect enough support from the PEO Council to pass a motion to include B.Tech. Programs into the list of Program’s that meet PEO’s acceptance criteria.  So, there is still work left to do!

We are actively exploring the pathway to P.Eng. through British Columbia or Alberta for our students, by sponsoring some graduates to apply to these jurisdictions.  This pathway is a possible one because any assigned technical exams can be taken online; hence, the process can be completed while the graduate resides and works in Ontario.  A P.Eng. license in another province is then easily transferable to Ontario.

One of our faculty members has arranged a meeting with PEO’s CEO & Registrar to further explain the impact the upcoming changes have on our graduates and present the human side of the impact they have on our current students.  Through this in-person meeting, set for late April, we hope the CEO will understand our situation and become our partner in the effort to convince the Council.

All alumni have been informed, through email, about the upcoming changes and have been urged to apply, if they want to obtain their P.Eng. designation, before these changes come into effect.

As discussed in our previous update, we have reached out to B.Tech. students who completed their courses in December 2022 and are due to graduate in June 2023.  Many of them have already had their Degree conferred early so they can apply to the PEO before May 15th.

As we declared last month, this issue is our top priority.  We are working actively on it.
